The Importance of the Birth Story

Maria Varvoutis, MPH, CD, PCD

"Where are the baby books?"

"How big was I when I was born?"

"Was I a hard baby?"

Each of these questions has been asked of me at some point by one of my kids. As they continue to get older they continue to reference previous stories, but they each had a distinctive time in their young lives that they wanted all the details about their 'baby life'.

For this very reason, I always recommend to all of the birthing people I talk to that they should jot down some of their birth story details in their phone, their journal app, their bedside journal, etc. Why? Because you will forget. I know, I know, you are a smart, and capable person who does not forget anything.

Just write it down.

For those looking for a bit more of an example, I have outlined a few questions to help you out. Feel free to copy and paste them into your working document or tablet.

Name of the birthing person:

Name of the partner:

City, State or Country of the Birth of the Baby:

Time of birth:

What feelings did you feel when you started to go into labor?

How did you go into labor?

Did you give birth in a foreign country or a new state?

What feelings did you have surrounding that?

How long was the labor?

Do you care to mention facts about anybody at birth? Somebody who visited you after?

What were your first thoughts upon bringing your baby to where you live?

I hope this helps.
